When Captain James Cook first arrived in Hawaii, the inhabitants worshipped him as an embodiment of their god Lono – or so Cook’s shipmates, and numerous later chroniclers, believed. More recently, though, some scholars have argued fiercely that the whole story is a typically arrogant piece of European colonial myth-making. Cook himself, who had risen from humble origins to become the greatest explorer of his age, was a classic British imperial hero figure; albeit less warlike than most of the breed. But the Europeans who followed him into the south Pacific brought demographic and environmental devastation in their wake.
